Sony PRS 500

Though the market will be flooded with e-book readers in the coming future, the most eagerly awaited one is the Sony Portable Reader, manufactured by Sony. The model PRS-500 has a screen comparatively better than the others with dimensions of 175.6 x 123.6 x 13.8 mm (6.9 in x 4.9 in x .5 in).

Sony PRS-500 is based on the E-Ink technology, which has been eagerly awaited for a long time. The primary display comprises of 90 x 120mm 6 in 4 gray levels, 800 x 600 pixels and 166.7ppi. However, the secondary display is absent in this version from Sony. Again, the touch screen technology has also not been provided in this model.

The full screen refresh rate is absolutely awesome in Sony PRS-500, as it takes just 1.0 s (0.5 s in 2 gray scales mode). The model is powered by Li-ion and the battery life is approximately 7′500 pages. It is a little on the heavier side, as it weighs around 250 g (8.8 oz).

The operating system in this model is standard Linux and the boot time required is almost 1:25 s for full boot whereas about 4 s for return from suspend. However, there is no mentioned SDK in this system. The CPU used is i.MXL MC9328MXL (ARM920T core, 200 MHz) along with the memory, which is 64 MB RAM, 2 MB (NOR) + 128 MB (NAND) Flash (91.9 MB user accessible).

The expansion slot contains SD/MMC and Memory Stick and the other interfaces include a headphone and USB 1.1. It uses the e-book library software and is serviced by Sony Connect. The supported formats include PDF, BBeB (LRF/LRX), RTF, TXT, BMP, JPG, PNG, GIF, MP3 and AAC, whereas the DRM formats include Marlin DRM (BBeB).

This model is set to be launched during the end of September and its new model would cost approximately $279.99. Hopefully, this model would be as good as it has been promised and eventually revolutionize the gadget world.
